Victim Offender Meeting Program Closes Doors

After nearly 25 years of providing victim offender meeting services to Multnomah County residents, Resolutions Northwest's juvenile Victim Offender Meeting Program closed its doors on July 1, 2009. This program was not included in Multnomah County's Juvenile Services Division budget and, despite a valiant effort, RNW was unable to restore or obtain alternative funding for this program. We have appreciated all the support and work our volunteers have dedicated to this program. We could not have done it without you!

Guantanamo:  A Missed Opportunity?

Kafka book coverOn May 7th, Bernie Casey, attorney, mediator and RNW Board Member. along with Steve Wax, Federal Public Defender for the District of Oregon, joined forces and treated RNW staff, volunteers and other community members to an exceptional workshop sharing their experiences representing detainees at Guantanamo. Bernie shared photographs which helped personalize the stories he shared about the three detainees he’s represented as well as depicted the conditions under which the detainees are being held.  Steve, who represented local lawyer Brandon Mayfield, arrested as a terrorist suspect after 9/11, talked about his client, a Sudanese hospital administrative who was taken from his apartment in chains and flown to Guantanamo apparently for no reason.  Both speakers talked about the long fought court right to habeas corpus and invited the audience to consider how things might have been different had the opportunity for open dialogue been available.  As one participant indicated, “this was the most informative and inspiring workshop I’ve ever attended”.  Look for a second workshop next fall!

A signed copy of Kafka Comes to America, Steve Wax’s widely acclaimed personal story of his clients’ post 9/11 counterterrorism experiences, is available  as a gift to the first fifteen $100 or more donors during our spring campaign, May 28 – June 30, 2009.
