Mediation: The Best Alternative
Mediation has been repeatedly shown to work better than traditional court systems and punishments in solving conflicts, reducing crime, and creating solutions that work for everybody. Some evidence from our programs:
- Mediation is ten times less expensive than court. In 2005, our costs were $478 per case. Resolving comparable cases in the justice system starts at $3000 per case of your tax dollars.

Mediation is four times more effective in reducing crime than court. When mediation is used to resolve cases, the offenders are up to 4 times less likely to commit a crime in the following year (Portland State University Criminal Justice Department Study, 2001).

Mediation is successful in nearly all cases. 94% of our clients report satisfaction with their mediated agreements. Even if it doesn't create a perfect solution, it still helps: 97% of our clients report satisfaction with the mediation process.

In 2005, the success of RNW's services was obvious by our actions:

Served 2,757 clients.
- Collected over $12,000 in restitution for victims of crime.
Volunteers contributed 2,224 hours of service.
Awarded a grant from NAFCM for 1.5 Americorps members to research and implement a restorative justice discpline program in local schools.
Sponsored 11th annual Oregon Peacemakers Conference for middle and high school students.
